How Often Should You Bathe Your Dog?

Does your pooch run when he hears the word ‘bath?’ If so, he’s not alone. Our canine companions are for the most part not very fond of being bathed, though they do enjoy feeling clean and fresh. Fido’s Energy Level

Just like people, our canine pals are all unique. Some are very active and playful, while others are, well, furry couch potatoes. Active dogs tend to need more baths than lazy ones.

Coat/Skin

One of the biggest things to consider is the type of fur Fido has. Some pooches, such as Boxers, only need to be bathed a few times a year. Others need monthly baths. Ask your vet for advice.

Allergies or Skin Problems

Many of our furry companions can have allergies. If Fido is one of them, or if he has other skin problems, he may need to be bathed in medicated shampoo. If your furry friend doesn’t tolerate traditional flea and tick treatments, he may need to be bathed more often to help keep him flea-free.

Some of our canine buddies absolutey love rolling around in mud and dirt. Needless to say, these pups are going to need more baths than those who go around puddles, rather than happily bounding into them. (We’re looking at you, Golden Retrievers.)  

Weather

If you take Fido to a groomer, he’ll probably be dry before you pick him up. However, if you bathe your four-legged friend at home, you may walk him as he dries off. In that case, you’ll also need to consider the weather. Needless to say, you don’t want to walk a wet dog when it’s cold out! That’s why many dogs get bathed more often in summer than in winter.
