Tui Na

October 1, 2022

As you may know, here at Petwise, we focus a lot on holistic pet care. One of the treatments we offer is Tui-na manipulative therapy. Tui-na is one of the five types of traditional Chinese veterinary medicine, or TCVM, which has been gaining popularity in the veterinary world as its benefits and uses become better known. A local Dawsonville, GA vet offers some insight on this ancient practice below.

History of Tui-Na

This practice may not be commonly known, but it has been in use for more than 3000 years. Tui -na dates back to the 11th century BC: specifically, the Shang Dynasty period. It’s referred to in the Huang Di Nei Jing, or Yellow Emperors Inner Classic, which was written in 475-221 BC.

Basics

Named for the words Tui (push) and Na (pull/lift), Tui-na utilizes a combination of massage, traction, pressure, and manipulation. It is similar to acupuncture, in that it focuses on manipulating the flow of energy, or Qi, through the body. (Chiropractic treatments are also in the same wheelhouse.) However, its use is geared around pain relief. As you may have noticed, rubbing or manipulating a sore spot often relieves pain. Tui-na builds on that basic principle.

Uses

Tui-na can be used to treat a variety of medical issues. It soothes sore joints, helps improve circulation, and improves immunity and organ function. In pets, it is most often used as a treatment for musculoskeletal conditions, such as arthritis. It’s also sometimes utilized to help with ligament and tendon issues, and can be beneficial for pets that have respiratory, digestive, or immune system problems. Pets also have better appetites, and often sleep more comfortably after treatment. It’s also sometimes used as a preventative treatment. In the veterinary world, it is often used along with other holistic practices, such as acupuncture.

Tips

Tui-na is wonderful, but it isn’t necessarily right for all of our animal companions. Pets that are very frail or fragile are often not good candidates. And, like all other holistic practices, it’s often most effective when used in conjunction with modern veterinary care. We love being able to offer our patients the best of both worlds! If you think your furry friend may benefit, ask your vet for more information. It never hurts to learn more!
