Laziness In Cats

August 1, 2022

Did you know that National Lazy Day is August 10th? Our feline pals probably can’t be bothered to celebrate, of course. Out of all our animal companions, Fluffy is clearly the least motivated. Why are cats so lazy? A local Dawsonville, GA vet offers some insight into this below.

Kitty Workouts

Have you ever wondered why cats are so tired all the time? Fluffy used to have to hunt for a living, but she really doesn’t have to do much these days aside from lounge about looking cute. It turns out that your furry little diva is still hardwired for her former career as a serial killer. It takes a lot of energy to catch a mouse or chipmunk! Once a kitty has caught her dinner, she’ll need to recuperate. Another reason for our feline buddies to take it easy? They can get in serious trouble if they overheat, as they can’t easily cool off again. (Then again, maybe Fluffy has just realized she can get us to wait on her.)

Keeping Fluffy Comfy

One of the best ways to please your feline overlord is to make sure she has lots of comfy spots. You don’t need to fill every room with cat furniture. An ottoman can make a great kitty bed. Fluffy is also pretty happy with a soft throw blanket folded up and put on a chair or sofa.

Sleeping Positions

Cats haven’t earned the title of being masters of laziness for nothing. Fluffy is able to relax and fall asleep in positions one would normally associate with pretzels, knots, or butterfly flight patterns. Your kitty may drape herself over a chair back, sprawl out in a doorway, or just twist herself up into knots. That’s talent!

Laziness Or Lethargy

Lethargy can be a symptom of many different health problems in cats. However, it can be a bit hard to tell if Fluffy is acting lethargic, or if she is just training hard to reach that ‘napping ninja’ status. Watch for other symptoms, such as reduced appetite, vomiting, respiratory issues, or unusual behavior. If your pet seems like her normal self when she’s actually awake, well, your kitty may just be lazy. However, if you aren’t sure, err on the side of caution and contact your vet.
