Helping Fido Beat The Heat

June 1, 2022

Summer is coming on fast! It may seem like just yesterday we were putting up Christmas decorations, but the hottest part of the year is bearing down fast. The summer heat can be both uncomfortable and dangerous for our four-legged friends, so you’ll want to take a few precautions to keep your canine pal comfy, cool, and safe as temperatures soar. A Dawsonville, GA vet discusses summer dog care below.

Water

Keeping Fido hydrated is always important, but it’s particularly crucial at this time of year. If you have a yard, a large home, or more than one pooch, set out multiple water stations.

Cold Treats

Frozen treats are a high point of summer for many people. Why not get your furry bff in on the fun? You can find doggy ice cream in many stores, but you can also make your own. Fido may also enjoy some frozen ‘pupsicles.’ Just put kibble or dog treats in an ice cube tray, pour water or sodium-free broth over them, and freeze. Instant tail wags!

Summer ‘Do

Many dogs are more comfortable with a cute summer haircut. Just check with your vet before scheduling a trim for Fido, as this isn’t a good option for all pups.

Cool Bed

Fido should always have a comfy bed. You may want to consider getting him a hammock bed for summer. Because air passes beneath them, these stay cooler than regular beds. You can also point a fan at your pup’s bed.

Paws

Don’t forget those furry feet! Hot tar and asphalt can really do a number on your canine companion’s paws. Use paw balm or wax to protect those toe beans, and try to avoid walking Fido across scalding-hot surfaces.

Schedule

When it’s really hot, you may want to adjust your furry buddy’s schedule, if possible. Try to walk and play with Fido in the mornings and evenings, so he can relax in cool indoor rooms during the hottest part of the day.

Doggo On The Go

Do you and Fido like visiting places like parks and trails? Always bring water along for your canine buddy. You may want to keep a bandana in his doggy bag. If Fido gets hot, pour water on it and tie it around his neck. Voila!
