Celebrating National Holistic Day With Pets

August 16, 2022

There’s a pretty special holiday coming up that has the puparazzi jumping for joy: National Holistic Day is August 30th! To be fair, if you were to tell Fido about the holiday, he’d probably just give you that adorable head tilt, while Fluffy would probably yawn and lick her paw. However, even if your pets don’t quite understand what holistic healthcare actually is, they can still benefit from it. A Clarkesville, GA vet discusses holistic pet care below.

Basics

Just what is holistic pet care? The word ‘holistic’ itself is actually a clue. Holistic care integrates the whole body … hence the term. Holistic health, whether applied to people or pets, encompasses several different elements, such as nutrition, acupuncture, and exercise. The key is to approach health in a gentle, non-invasive way, and to not just address physical issues, but also help the mind and soul.

Good Food

Good nutrition is an important part of your pet’s overall care. Look for brands that use whole, organic ingredients, and limit or eliminate the use of chemical additives and preservatives. Keep in mind that every pet is different. Some dogs may need lots of Omega-3 and 6 oils, while others may benefit more from having lots of antioxidants. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Reduced Stress

With people, holistic care often involves things like yoga, meditation, and massage. These help relax and calm you, reducing stress and anxiety. These practices can also benefit pets! Animals can also feel stressed or upset, get stiff and sore, or just need to unwind a bit.

Proper Exercise

Just like people, dogs need to stay active to stay healthy. Take Fido for a walk in a pretty park or trail system. Spending time outdoors with your canine pal, and enjoying some fresh air and sunshine, will be good for both you and your pet. Fluffy will enjoy some extra play time, and perhaps a new toy.

Veterinary Care

Last but not least, you can also look into holistic veterinary care options. These may encompass a variety of things, including products, such as Chinese herbal medicine, supplements, and non-toxic shampoos; to holistic practices, such as massage and acupuncture. Of course, holistic medicine isn’t an either/or situation. It’s really the best of both worlds!
