Water Safety For Dogs

July 1, 2022

If you like swimming, you may absolutely love this time of year. Many of our canine patients also love the water! Retrievers, for instance, often take to swimming like furry, barking ducks. Swimming can be great fun for Fido. It’s also a good way for him to get his doggy workout in. However, you’ll need to take some precautions to keep your cute pet safe. A Dawsonville, GA vet discusses water safety tips for Fido below.

Pools

Whenever you take Fido to a pool, immediately show him where the stairs are. Test him a bit, to make sure he remembers. You may want to put a visible landmark, such as a potted tree or life preserver, near the exit. We also recommend keeping pools gated off when they aren’t in use, especially if you use a pool cover.

Swimming Holes

Do you prefer swimming in lakes or rivers? Choose your swimming holes carefully: you don’t want yourself or your pup swimming with a gator or a poisonous snake! Stick with beaches that allow pets. These tend to have shallower slopes, which is also safer for Fido. Blue-green algae blooms are also super dangerous. Check local resources before trying new spots.

Beaches

Headed to the coast? Whether you’re going on a day trip or just spending a few days at the ocean, you’ll want to pick a place that allows dogs. Avoid spots with heavy wakes, steep drop-offs, and/or strong currents.

Boats

Boating can make for a pretty perfect afternoon. It can be dangerous for our canine pals, though. Always bring a lifejacket along for Fido, even if he can swim. It’s also worth pointing out that not all dogs are good candidates for boating. Some pups are scared of boats and water, while others may get a bit nauseous.

Anywhere

Always bring water along for Fido. You’ll also need to protect his paws, as dogs can easily get burned from running around on hot tar or pavement. Your pet’s paws will be extra delicate after he’s been in the water. Paw balm can help protect those furry feet.

Don’t Force It

Swimming isn’t right for all dogs. Some aren’t cut out for it, and others just don’t like it. If your pooch is a furry, four-legged landlubber, let him be!
