Keeping Your Kitten Safe

May 1, 2022

Have you recently adopted a kitten? Congratulations! Your bouncing ball of fur is sure to charm the socks off of you. She’ll also keep you on your toes … at least, when she isn’t pouncing on them. Little Fluffy may be tiny, but she has the predatory instincts of a lion … and absolutely no idea what is and isn’t safe. A Dawsonville, GA vet offers some advice on keeping your tiny furball safe in this article.

Petproofing

It’s a good thing that little Fluffy is cute: she’s basically a tiny, fuzzy whirlwind of chaos at this stage. In the process of mastering all those claws and teeth, your little buddy will try to eat, attack, explore, or play with anything and everything within reach. Remove or secure anything that could be dangerous. That includes small or sharp objects, wires and cords, toxic plants, plastic wrappers and ties, and toxic plants.

Supervision

When Fluffy is all grown up, she’ll be easy to spot … and too big to get stuck under your buffet. However, while your feline friend is still a baby, she’ll make a pretty small lump under a blanket or cushion, and can easily get stepped or sat on. Keep a close eye on your little buddy!

Appliances

Toilets, dryers, refrigerators and even ovens can all be dangerous. Don’t rule out the possibility of little Fluffy hopping in when your back is turned! Keep these appliances closed when not in use.

Veterinary Care

Kittens are very fragile, and they can get sick really fast. Be sure to follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule for getting little Fluffy her initial vaccines and parasite control products. At home, watch for signs of illness or injury. Lethargy, fever, respiratory issues, and litterbox woes are a few red flags that would mean your pint-sized pal needs immediate emergency care.

Keep The Furball In

Your feline pal may look cute sniffing around your flowerbeds, but she’s much, much safer inside, where she isn’t exposed to the dangers posed by cars, wild animals, chemicals, weather, and even the neighbor’s cat. Teaching little Fluffy that she’s an indoor kitty from Day One is definitely the best way to go with this.
